Coffee grounds

Coffee is grown in about 80 countries around the world and is a major trade commodity. It is the second most traded raw material in the world. Although coffee consumption fell slightly in 2019/2020 due to the pandemic as restaurants and cafes closed for several weeks, the total amount of coffee consumed worldwide in 2020/2021 would fit in 166,628,000 60 kg bags, creating a huge amount of used coffee grounds. .

In the Czech Republic, up to 80,000 tons of coffee grounds are produced annually, which largely end up in landfills and thus become an important source of CO 2 production. In recent years, many companies have been exploiting it, but more and more attention is needed. With regard to the amount of “loose” coffee grounds, we at NAFIGATE Corporation also began to deal with its fate.

Circular approach

The basic idea of Hydal coffee is to use a unique cascade recycling for the complete processing of used coffee grounds, ie. apply zero waste concept. Using the technologies, products and business models used, we want to support the circular economy and thus mitigate the impact on climate change.

Thanks to modern technologies, we gradually obtain high-quality ingredients during the gradual removal of valuable parts of coffee grounds, which are used in the cosmetics industry or serve as an input material for the production of plastic products.

Cascade recycling

Cascade recycling creates space for partnership and cooperation with large coffee grounds producers. Manufactured products such as soaps, hand creams, coffee oil and biological materials for the production of plastic products can be reused in their operations – both employees and customers. By processing 1 kg of coffee grounds, we save up to 6 kg of CO 2 and no waste remains at the end of our production (zero waste production).

During the primary processing of coffee and its subsequent industrial processing, secondary raw materials are produced. The most important is the ground coffee used (coffee grounds).

As this raw material contains a large amount of valuable organic substances (fatty acids as components of coffee oil together with various antioxidants, phenolics and brown dyes, lignin, cellulose, hemicelluloses, other various polysaccharides, minerals and caffeine), it is a pity to evaluate and handle it as with waste.

Cascade recycling is an innovative solution that allows the use of coffee grounds to the last grain and at the same time supports the idea of circular economy.

Coffee soap production

At Nafigate, we have found a way to effectively use coffee grounds efficiently in the production of cosmetics. We create soaps from a secondary raw material with a pleasant peeling effect, which is mediated by coffee grounds. We shape the soap by hand into a coffee bean.

Coffee oil

Extracted coffee oil from dried coffee grounds is another very interesting raw material, which we obtain by cascade recycling. Its use is then in the cosmetics industry and in biotechnology.

Coffee biomass

Extracted coffee biomass serves as mastrbatches - dyes for other plastic products. In cooperation with partners, the final plastic products from coffee grounds are created.

Benefits of coffee oil

Anti-aging effect

It stimulates collagen synthesis and thus supports the skin's ability to regenerate. The oil also contains palmitic acid, which occurs naturally in the skin and protects it from external influences. The oil is suitable for sagging and dry skin, as it works as a sponge that absorbs nutrients into the lower layers of the skin. It also has antioxidant properties that protect against the harmful effects of the environment and act against skin aging and wrinkles.

Firming effect

Another popular use of coffee oil in cosmetics is body lotions for firming the skin and against cellulite. The contained caffeine supports blood circulation and can thus contribute to making the skin look firmer.

UV booster

Because coffee oil has protective effects against the sun's rays, it can support protection against UV rays. This reduces the amount of other mineral UV filters in the product. It also works against aging and wrinkles. In addition, it hydrates the skin and reduces wrinkles caused by light.

Moisturizing effect

Coffee oil can also be added to serums or creams. Adds freshness to the skin and intensively hydrates. In addition, ingredients such as caffeestol, kahweol and phytosterols have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Benefits of coffee grounds

Peeling

Leaves skin soft and smooth.

Microplast replacement

Minimization of waste and components that are not biodegradable.

Naturetics

We already produce unique coffee soaps by hand under our own brand Naturetics.

Coffee soap

Coffee peeling soap

100% natural, handmade soap with coffee grounds 80 g (± 5%)
Gently cleanses, hydrates and softens the skin. Packed in parchment paper. Stored in a box made of handmade paper with a pressed coffee grounds, made in Velké Losiny.

Waste-free concept

... not a grain of waste remains at the end of the process

We make coffee grounds from one tonne

0 kg of soap
0 kg of biomass
0 kg of oil
... and thanks to the unique production technology we save 0 kg CO 2

Masterbeč

Masterbetch is a solid additive to plastics that is used to color plastics (color masterbatch) or to impart other properties to plastics (additive masterbatch). The liquid dosage form is called a liquid paint. A masterbatch is a concentrated mixture of pigments and / or additives encapsulated during a thermal process in a carrier resin, which is then cooled and cut into a granular shape. The masterbatch allows the processor to economically color the raw polymer during the plastics production process.

In cooperation with Remarkplast , we have developed and prepared the production of the first and only circular bio masterbenches in the world . The range of uses is wide – dyeing plastics or making flower pots, trays, cups. Everything is solved according to the partner’s requirements.
